As an economist, the Great Depression was already in full swing at this point. It being “Great” is because the depression rippled around the world. Smoot Hawley made things worse because most Americans (specifically working class) couldn’t even purchase cheaper foreign goods. Keep in mind that by this point the Dust Bowl hadn’t happened yet. When it did, your options were spend way too much money on imported food or literally fucking starve. Some Americans took a secret third option.
The secret third option was murder-suicide of the family before starvation got them. The third option inspired Bob Dylan to write the song Ballad of Hollis Brown. It’s also why you’ve likely seen the photos of previously wealthy Americans trying to sell their car (just to feed their families) and extremely qualified American workers being jobless and trying to find anything to make even a small wage.
