“Puerto Ricans should have to assimilate to American culture” honestly wtf even is American culture? Like California, Florida, Texas, Washington, NY, Ohio, etc are all American but vastly different. It’s almost like there actually isn’t just one culture.

I wouldn’t say culture necessary but all immigrants should have to speak the language (English) and pledge allegiance to the country they waited to get into. Doesn’t have to be perfect but it should be expected to adapt to the world you’re choosing to enter yk

Puerto Ricans aren’t immigrants. And why should they have to speak English? Up until last year the us didn’t have an official language and we all know that it was just done for culture war bs. Puerto Ricans are Americans and they primarily speak Spanish. Many born and raised Latinos still speak Spanish why should they have to give that up? Acting like English makes someone more American is basically just relegating those who don’t assimilate or hold onto their heritage as second class citizens.

I was talking about immigrants in general but PR should have to as well. No body ever said anyone has to give up their culture or stop speaking their native language. But everyone should have to speak English since that is the main language spoken in the US. You aren’t going to see someone say move to Japan or Russia and not learn their languages even at an elementary level. You should have to learn in addition to what you already speak

They should speak whatever they learned to speak as well as English if they are moving to continental US or assimilating into that lifestyles. All immigrants should no matter where they come from

I didn’t know that Japan and Russia prided themselves on multiculturalism and being a bastion of freedom. Frankly why the fuck should I care about Russia and Japan they have nothing to do with us here when our history is very different. Saying Puerto Ricans should have to learn English when they don’t even get all the same rights as us despite being citizens is crazy work. People like you don’t want e pluribus unum.1/2

Assimilate to what? I go back to my original question what is American culture because you’re not gonna tell me that all those places I listed above are culturally the same just because English is the primary language.

Bro what. I was simply bringing up the fact that all countries expect you to speak their language if you move there so why shouldn’t we. Also what rights to Puerto Ricans not have? I am Puerto Rican and I have all the same rights as everyone else. Are you talking about the citizens living in the 50 states or the territory of PR because as a territory they don’t have the same rights as citizens living in the US (ex: voting, press, speech, subsidies, healthcare, etc)

Well if you could read for once look at my first comment where I explicitly made a distinction between culture. American culture is a mixing pot but people should also know the language and support the country if you want to live here.

The only reason you gave for ppl must learn English was “well Russia and Japan do it so let’s just be like them” I need a better reason than look at their standards. Their history is far different from ours so I need something a lot better than “woe is me I’d be expected to do this somewhere else.” The fact of the matter is language is tied to heritage and telling immigrants they need to “assimilate to lifestyles” and must speak English or they shouldn’t be allowed here is frankly 1/2

Pretty unamerican to me. Like o said ppl like you think e pluribus unum and the poem on the Statue of Liberty are faulty and should be replaced with citizens that can be considered “first among equals.”
