It's sad that conservatives always need a domestic enemy. First it was Black people during the civil rights movement, then gay people, followed by Muslims after 9/11, and now trans people. You cannot have a peaceful democracy when people think like this.

when you look at influential conservative thinkers (like carl schmitt) they basically believe that having an ideological enemy is what’s necessary for a functional society

Teddy Roosevelt started as a Republican and I guess his domestic enemy was Congress… which as the story goes, he absolutely “mogged” as they say.

This is a uniquely conservative problem. No one on the left has ever demonized cuban americans, jewish americans, asian americans, or the rich rural southern capitalist christian straight cis white male.

The pro Palestinian people certainly have. And the democrats of Johnson’s era trying to manipulate black America, FDR during WWII against Japanese in America… I’m sure I could find more examples.
