Don’t get me wrong evangelicalism is insanely toxic to the society and culture of every country in which it has spread, but the others have plenty of bad stuff too. They were worse before they mellowed out in the last 70 years also.

Yeah true idm like “oh look these other sects are perfect!” But moreso like the denouncement of science and the increased use of religious beliefs in traditionally secular governments seem to be driven by the evangelical movement. Granted those other groups were pretty much evangelicals hundreds of years ago, but they’ve all adapted as our world view has with things like the renaissance and enlightenment

Evangelicalism is more symptom than root imo. The deeper split is gnosis vs pistis. Early 'orthodoxy' (small o) defined itself against the Gnostics in the 2nd-4th centuries, picking faith/assent to correct doctrine over direct inner knowing. Once salvation hinges on believing the right creed, you get authority, heresy-hunting, and suspicion of independent inquiry. Sola fide just sharpened that. Evangelicals are the latest, loudest version of a 1,700 year old choice.
