well there are a lot of ways people can reduce their climate impact with relatively little inconvenience but they are loud about not using ai it makes it seem like they only care about climate impact if it’s not theirs

what makes you think they’re not already doing that? consumer pollution rates have decreased since the 90\?

taking shorter showers, reducing red mead consumption, always turning off lights when you aren’t in the room, not buying so much new clothing, not wasting food…

so like you can’t actually see most of those things unless ur documenting daily meals, or shower usage? my point is that ultimately every time we point the finger at corporations that commit 70% of the pollution, someone like u comes out and says “we could be more resourceful!” like no shit, but what’s the point if billionaires are just gonna buy another private jet?

well i mean its not actually hard to do any of those things like you can set a timer for a shower and you can actually pay attention to what you eat and avoid being wasteful which everyone should do its not hard at all so there’s not really an excuse but yeah ultimately large scale corporations are the worst offenders i never said they weren’t. just made a comment on what i notice about people around me

and all that comment does is both derail the conversation, while also giving an excuse to people and corporations. Like someone inevitably always takes away “well other people aren’t doing the things they should be so why should i inconvenience myself”. Like your comment is a net negative

it’s not derailing anything it’s a criticism of people who are anti ai not a criticism of people for not doing enough to stop climate change. i’m saying they’re hypocrites not that they should be doing more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

but they’re definitively not. AI may not take up as much water produce as much pollution as people think or as some other sex of the market/economy but the biggest impact it’s having is that it absolutely destroys whatever ecosystem they plant a data center in. I’m from georgia. I have seen the water absolutely get destroyed across 50 miles worth of neighborhoods, that destroys not only peoples lives, but the ecosystem. And if you know anything about the environment, it’s all one big loop.

no no it’s nefarious stuff for sure but i question the depth of people’s actual concern for environmental justice when their activism starts and stops at AI usage is all. vulnerable communities have been polluted and exploited forever from all types of forms of businesses i think it’s all important
