He said that black women who get positions over white women weren’t actually qualified. He said that black people were better off enslaved. He said that he hated empathy. In what world was he not a bad guy when he was a bigot who used a platform to normalize racism and all other kinds of bigotry?
Thats not the whole quote “I can't stand the word empathy, I think empathy is a made up new age term that— it does a lot of damage, but it's very effective when it comes to politics, sympathy I prefer over empathy but that's another topic for another time.". He then goes on to say later “sympathy is a better word because empathy means you are actually feeling what another person felt, and no one can feel what another person feels” .
What’s wrong with it? It’s completely true. Nobody feels exactly what another person feels, you can only project your assumption and reaction onto that person. Secondly, it’s entirely possible to define a positive term such that it can’t apply to another group, and then conditioning people to use it as a way to give themselves moral high ground and denounce others. Can happen with any positive term really, it just ended up being empathy.
it’s kinda a self report if you say you can’t empathize only sympathize. You can see someone going through the same thing you did and you can recall that feeling, if you can’t then that’s on you 🤷. Like that quote further projects individualism that capitalism thrives off of bc you can further exploit the already secluded people if they’re not empathizing with others.
No no. Sympathy exists fully as what we feel at others circumstances. We then try to project that onto others and that becomes empathy, which is basically just sympathy under the assumption you know exactly how it feels to be in that place, an assumption that is always false. Sympathy at least anyone can give in spite of whether or not they understand someone’s circumstance, which is arguably better. But go ahead and twist my words, I expect as much.
Charlie took the definition a little more exact than what most people did, and that’s why he’d say stuff like this, it’s fairly obvious that it’s just a difference in how you perceive the definition, charlie thought of it as “you can’t feel exactly what their feeling because the circumstances are not 100% the same.” For example, say we both lost our moms in a car wreck, the exact same scenario, Charlie thought “I can’t empathize with you because my feelings ab it aren’t the EXACT same as yours”
Some people are incapable of empathy. I’m not trying to villainize you for that, like it’s ok to not be able to bc you can learn through reflection and/or therapy. But if you personally can’t empathize and then say “it doesn’t exist.” That’s a very very dangerous rhetoric to be spreading. You’re just using this conversation to victimize yourself and that’s very apparent.
Tf you mean. I’m just thinking logically here. You don’t think I feel bad for people? I just know I can never know exactly what someone’s life is like and what they go through, which is why any feeling I would have even if you would attribute it to empathy is really just sympathy.
My man do you think there are no more living Nazis? Real ones continue to show their face and when people say hey that shits pretty similar to Nazi rhetoric you all just go “stop exaggerating” when you all can’t actually name substantial differences between the two. You need to stop sticking your head in the sand and excusing rhetoric and beliefs that yeah are pretty fucking similar to fucking Nazis. Hell you should examine why your more offended by the suggestion of someone being a Nazi than
Saying black people were better in slavery and reducing them to “prowling blacks” and saying that black women don’t have the brain processing power to be taken as seriously as white women and that the civil rights act was a mistake and that 10 year olds should have to give birth and that if he was flying under a black pilot he wouldn’t believe he was qualified are just a few examples.
