Capital is one of the most important historical and sociological works of the modern age, even if you disagree with Marx’s conclusions. He founded the entire Conflict Theory school of sociology in that book, which is still widely influential on the field. Marxism also isn’t a religion, it’s a theoretical lens through which one can view history, economics, sociology, etc. You can literally use a Marxist lens to come to different conclusions than Marx did, as many people have done and still do.
This Red Scare ass fear of interacting with Marx as an academic is both intellectual cowardice and gives you a blindspot as far as arguing against Marxist positions go. If you can’t view the world through a Marxian lens at all, then you can never understand the position of Marxism enough to effectively counter it, if that is your goal. This is why the US Military during the Cold War had people read Marxist theory, to understand the perspective of the enemy. It’s a valuable read either way.
For example, the University of Michigan’s bookstore came under fire during the Cold War because they were selling The Communist Manifesto, people claimed the school was “teaching Marxism.” But do you know who they were selling it to? ROTC kids, for whom it was required reading for “know your enemy” reasons.
