 I can very easily see modern maga defending slavery, if they were back in the day. Abolitionism was the progressive idea. People would be all “I’m not gonna pay more taxes just because these deranged lefties want to take peoples OWN PROPERTY from them” 😭

Fun fact: the liberal perspective at the time was basically putting all the slaves back in Africa and compensating owners lol, this was the stance of people like Henry Clay and (briefly) Lincoln. It definitely was a terrible idea. But the more left groups were pro- complete abolition
