Like dgmw I’m all for improving the conditions of lab animals and reducing tests, but eliminating them completely brings up way more problems than it’s worth. E.g: How do we know a medicine works? We test it in mice, rabbits, up to monkeys, then humans. Testing on monkeys, while not ideal obv, gives us the opportunity to see how medicines affect primates, which is far more correlative to human health than mice or rabbits. Without monkeys to test on, the rate of medical advancements will slow
The vast majority of animal tests on primates and otherwise including in medical research are unnecessary. To say that discontinuing it will outright “destroy American healthcare” is completely blown out of proportion and also ignores the root of the issue here which is that this was not done for the animals unfortunately but was done as part of the broader dismantling of healthcare in America
Unnecessary according to who, though? Because according to the FDA, they have been necessary. That’s not an objective statement necessarily but a legally binding one for sure. And one that absolutely impacts how our medicines are tested before mass distribution let alone human testing
I’m pretty sure the fda requires it too (although I could be wrong) My mom works in the private sector very closely with the fda. She’s full regulatory reports for like 50 different medications atp, and she’s talked about primate tests numerous times in meetings I’ve overheard
Yes the fda will still require it so the industry is still going to do it. The cdc’s facilities simply aren’t doing it. And to wrap up lastly cuz im sick and tired my guy i understand animal testing isn’t fully avoidable for medical advancement but I do hope it will be one day and these animals hopefully getting to be free is not the root issue of what’s gonna hurt healthcare so im gonna celebrate them but grieve the bigger picture ofc
Yeah for the CDC that’s a whole different can of worms, I think they’re mainly testing diseases in animals there not necessarily medicines. That might be a net good in the long run. It’s probably way easier to simulate infection spread in a population than how a medicine works in the body
Yea one of the tests I saw halted was like hiv prevention which like obviously noble cause don’t get me wrong and it’s the thing they’re researching that’s motivating the government to stop the research not wanting to liberate animals BUT I’m still happy they’re not gonna be infecting monkeys with hiv yk?
