
This is slightly misleading. He got a plea deal with a 10 year *suspended* sentence. 6 months actually behind bars is part of that deal. The other 9.5 years are on probation. If he violates probation, he goes back to jail for the full 9.5 years. While I think this is wayyyyyy too short, this isn’t just “Republicans”. The key context to know is that this happened 40 years ago. The statute of limitations would have passed, but they’re using a new theory (tolling statute) that pauses the clock when the perpetrator leaves the state. It’s not clear whether that would have worked (there is also a bill named after the victim which would have eliminated the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse, but idk if that can be retroactive).
