Real talk, how does that actually work? The government can just seize property?

My guess is go somewhere else.

probably through a foreclosure like process

Isn’t that because the bank technically owns it unless it’s fully paid off?

They always could, it’s called “eminent domain” if I remember correctly (commonly used for highway development and infrastructure, however not exclusively. also more commonly used towards marginalized demographics in comparison to the frequency it’s employed on their white counterparts, but ultimately as long as you’re poor you’re a viable target)

Idk if eminent domain would be the method in the topic of mamdani seizing the property of negligent or abusive landlords, but just as an example that the government def established the means to seize property (regardless of my opinion on it, personally I agree with the applications that mamdani is proposing, but eminent domain has a troubling history)

You wouldn’t use eminent domain for that A court can seize a landlords property if they just don’t pay taxes or fees on it. They typically will not do that- first they will put a lien on it. What Mamdani would do is to just very strictly enforce codes and give huge fees, until the worst landlords leave of their own free will, or fix the property. That is what a “crackdown” means, big fines to corporate slumlords, less to tenants and normal 1-2 property owners
