i mean when you have a persecution complex like most conservatives do, the practical reality of ‘technically you need to have your card but nobody is ever going to check it unless you’re a cunt’ feels a lot more like being asked for your papers i lived in a very progressive city in a blue state and i can’t remember having to show it for anything outside of getting services performed that necessitated very close contact with others

One of my jobs during the pandemic was turning away guests that didn’t have their cards on them

I was in NY during it and I had to show my card for a lot of things (it was an app later, still have it downloaded I think???) restaurants, broadway shows, regular movies, gyms, probably a few other places that I just didn’t go and this was like 2021-2022 as part of their reopening thing

my college checked them when in-person classes resumed but you could literally just stay online that one (1) semester if you were really that against it

The only place I ever heard of them doing this was at event venues, concerts and shit. And yeah, I get it, don’t want the first concert back to immediately become a super-spreader event connected to multiple deaths lmao

Even from just a coldhearted corporate perspective, that’s bad PR.

New York City was like the global epicenter of the pandemic, they obviously had to take harsher measures at both the state and municipal levels than most places in America. In a place with that kind of population density, you kinda just have to take infectious disease threats a lot more seriously than in other places.

And even if the argument is “well COVID isn’t even that severe, it’s basically just a flu” that still ignores that it was a BRAND NEW DISEASE. They didn’t know how bad it was or was not. And in a case where you don’t know how bad the infection is, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.
