I’m simultaneously the kind of leftist who criticizes the No Kings protests for being aimless pressure-release valves, and also the kind of guy who goes to all of them to promote political organizations I’m in to the other attendees.

and just like that, a portion of the country thinks their parade did absolutely anything and sits their asses down until summer for another parade No kings day is designed to make you feel like you’re doing something while preventing meaningful organization. if you actually want to make a difference, start organizing focused general strikes. walking in the city isn’t going to do shit unless you’re willing to actually set up camp on those streets

if you want to actually resist the rise of fascism, we need to do so much more than a simple parade mimicking a protest.

That last part of your comment is the reason for these protests. Building support networks with other organizations with common goals. The point is the organizing of people who agree things need to be better. Protests alone do nothing. It’s what happens behind the scenes and after the fact. It’s drilling people on how to organize mass movements. Which is hard.

I’ve talked with and observed a number of people who didn’t think much of the NK protests they attended. They tend to find other small groups or find another means of contribution so there’s positive effect on people who don’t like the performative nature of it all. The best thing of going to the protests is the reassurance that there’s a vast array of people across age groups who think this administration needs tossed out.
