Why is no one in politics talking about the rapid decline in math and literacy scores among high school graduates in the last few years. Education is so fucking politicized but we’re failing kids on the most basic levels and no one seems to care

The current administration has outright said they want people to remain uneducated. They’re easier to misinform and control. Trust me there are plenty of teachers out there (myself included) who are horrified and doing what we can to help. But there’s only so much you can do when your administration fires you for treating kids with respect and your salary is barely enough to pay bills

25% of high school graduates are functionally illiterate and probably even more are entirely unequipped to handle university-level math and science courses. This is a crisis and for some reason everyone would rather talk about how old kids should be when they learn that gay people exist

Oh trust me I get it. I have friends who are teachers and with the amount of effort they put into getting lesson plans ready, grading and giving feedback to students, educating themselves on the topics they have to teach about, etc. I feel pretty confident in saying it’s not the teachers. Especially considering those people could be doing other things with their lives, working less, and making more money. But you’re right, something needs to change from the top-down
