saying slurs is racist, yes. appropriating cultures is also racist. i listen to SO much rap music, and even love Vince Staples latest “Blackberry Marmalade”… i am creative enough to use different words instead of the n-word because i’m not stupid. i respect the people too much to do that.
they inevitably have the same outcome, even if there isn’t a person directly there to suffer from it. ultimately, you saying a slur causes harm to someone. if you’re not around anyone, there is no one to know that you said a slur, but you still performed the act that causes harm. it may not have the exact same impact, but you still engaged in the exact same bad behavior. you’re dismissing the weight and impact of those words in order to justify your preferred ability to use them.
also, while you do so, think about this scenario: You believe you’re alone while driving on the road, you go ahead and sing along to a song, saying a slur along the way, but as you’re stopped at a red light you notice someone in the car next to you overhears you saying said slur. How do you feel?
the reasoning is that in all uses of all language, context matters. the same act of saying a slur can be racist in one instance and not racist in another instance. if the context is youre singing a song then no its not racist. if the context is youre directing a slur against a black person then yes it is racist
the slur itself is racist, that’s the issue underpinning your reasoning that you mistake. it’s not about solely context of use, it’s about the context of the words *origin*. the word itself is racist, or prejudiced (to generalize for other slurs related to other forms of discrimination)
I’m sorry dude but this is purely your arrogance in wanting to use slurs without consequence. Like you’re not right about this lmfao, but you’re probably going to keep using slurs anyway. Yeah, you’re gonna be considered racist whether you like it or not, and that’s your own fault. You may not be as racist as a klansman, but you’re racist in your own regard.
in real life most people hide their true feelings from others. I don’t care if people may not say it to your face, but based on what you specifically said here, yes you are slightly racist. like I said though, you’re not klansman type racist, but do not be mistaken as you absolutely hold your own prejudice within. if you’re curious, go ahead and stop by whatever university is near you and have this same conversation with any political science or sociology professor, and ask for their opinion.
the more often you say a slur, regardless of the context, the more likely you’ll “slip up” and “accidentally” say it around people because it’s become commonly and freely used in your vocabulary… there’s literally no reason to say that. for fuck’s sake, just GET CREATIVE and say something else at those lyrics... “another” “brother” “homie” “mama” or any other two-syllable slant rhyme ffs like just SAY you’re disrespectful, & uncreative then, instead of all this shit!!
I find it interesting how you hyperfixate on my reference of a sociology professor when I mentioned either a sociology or political science one; and as a reminder I told you to go talk to one at your nearest university. let me guess, are you one of those “sociology isn’t real science” dumbasses?
did I say they were? I’m specifically talking about your tokenization of your friends in order to avoid being called out for your subtle racism. to expand from your own point, do you think a single black person telling you something isn’t racist means that every black person would agree that it isn’t racist? since you wanted to discuss viewing a demographic as a monolith.
so you recognize why it’s not valid to attempt to cite your friends perspective as a justification for using slurs? your opinion does not outweigh the documented history and origin of the words you choose to use. it’s the same as if a straight man wanted to say the f slur by themselves. you may not be directly impacting anyone, but you’re still making the choice to use that slur with full knowledge of the weight and impact behind it.
it’s not about the song, and you know that. if I knew you were going to be dodging the point this much, I would’ve recommended you stretched beforehand. at the end of the day, do what you want. you actively choose to use slurs, while most of us don’t out of respect. especially considering the current revitalization of white supremacy in the US, it’s a bit strange (to say the least) to fight tooth and nail in order to use slurs without critique; but I digress. you do you lmao
