Christianity isn't one thing. There are thousands of denominations that disagree on almost everything, and the idea that only one of them is the "real" one didn't come from Jesus. It came from Rome. In 380 the empire made Nicene Christianity the official religion and started treating every other kind of Christian as a criminal. "One true faith" was state policy before it was theology.
And empires used it on other Christians constantly. Arians got exiled. The Cathars got wiped out in a crusade a pope called. Anabaptists got drowned by Catholics AND Protestants. Here at home, Puritan Boston hanged Quakers, Missouri ordered Mormons driven out or "exterminated" in 1838, and Philly had anti-Catholic riots in 1844. A huge share of Christian persecution in history came from other Christians.
So suppressed Christian traditions are real. But they're a small minority, and most of that is old history nobody remembers. The people pushing the persecution story today aren't them. It's mostly mainstream American Christianity, often from the same lineages that did the suppressing, claiming victimhood while holding most of the power.
