Yeah they did. Reached an agreement with Mauritius last year and are currently finalizing it. However, the chagossians were not consulted in the agreement, so they are very unhappy about that. But the new deal will allow them to return home, aside from Diego Garcia. The UK is also establishing a trust fund to facilitate the return of the islanders and the creation of liveable infrastructure.

Yeah there’s some wild history there the British broke it off from Mauritius right before Mauritian independence, then expelled the 2,000 people who lived there so the USA could build a military base. So it’s been a big political issue.

There’s been some dumb right wing fearmongering about it. Claims that now Mauritius will let China build a base there. Which 1. Foreign military bases aren’t that much of a Chinese thing. 2. Why would they build one right beside an American base. And 3. If China really wanted to they could just build one in the southern Maldives anyways
