Real talk as somebody who is living in Japan rn don’t be giving Japan too much of a pass on this. The government here is really racist, discrimination is de facto legal (often just straight up legal actually) and anti-foreigner sentiment is almost certainly part of the reason for this policy. Idk details about this specific case but the current Japanese politicians in power at the national level have more in common with the American far right than they do differences, 1/

I mean yeah but what I’m saying is maga is dumb and wrong but they are essentially correct if they’re pointing to Japan and saying those are the policies they are aspiring to. Like in a way that can’t be just chalked up to “well yeah it’s asia!”

I guess I’m just really sick of the apologia for Japanese far-right politics and politicians outside of Japan. People act like it’s a completely different thing or somehow more reasonable because it’s Japan and it’s not.
