Female is the phenotype organized around the production of larger gametes (ova). Male is the phenotype organized around the production of smaller gametes (sperm). What other sexes exist? Please list them

Yes but if you haven't realized, humans have 2 sexes and humans are not schizophyllum commune.

True, humans do have two sexes, but not only two.

Other than the VERY off-chance they are born intersex, what are the other sexes you can be born as?

A single intersex person in the history of humans would disprove the notion that sex is binary. Intersex people are more common than redheads, and you don’t see people going around claiming that humans ONLY have black, brown, or blonde hair.

“if you don’t mention the fact intersex people exist, then it’s a binary”

No, because it is just a combination of the 2 existing sexes. It is an intersection of the 2 sexes - inter sex.

Intersex people are not an exception to this btw, intersex people are still male or female but have ambiguous sex characteristics which is not the same as having a different sex.

Is a post menopausal woman not female? Is a male who dies at age 5 not a male? Both of those examples do not produce gametes.

That is not true, many intersex people have primary sexual characteristics of both sexes. Look up “ovotestes” for an example.

A post menopausal woman’s phenotype is organized around the production of ova. A 5 year old male’s phenotype is organized around the production of sperm. These aren’t exceptions.

Genuine question, why are you making a phenotypic argument rather than a genotypic one? And does the phenotypic argument you’re making imply that people who cannot, for some biological reason, produce sex cells, do not have a sex?

An ovotestis can contain both ovarian and testicular tissue, but can only produce either sperm or ova. There is no third gamete.

This is the standard definition of sex used by biologists. Sex is a reproductive role, the genotype just guides the development of that role. In some species like hogfish, their sex changes throughout their lifetime. We know this because their phenotype changes from being organized around the production of ova to being organized around the production of sperm.

If you have a bag of 20 blue and 20 red marbles, but then throw in a purple marble, that makes the color of the marbles in the bag no longer a binary. It doesn’t matter if purple is created by mixing blue and red, it’s in the end it’s own unique color

Yeah, some species can be hermaphroditic. Humans however only have two sexes.

Intersex people are either male or female. I think you mean to say a single functionally hermaphroditic person. I don’t think the argument works though. It’s generally accepted to say that humans have two legs, despite rare exceptions existing. One person in several billion would hardly change the accepted fact that sex in humans is binary. It’s a moot point though as no such person has ever been documented.

If a single person in human history has ever produced both a single sperm and a single egg cell, which has happened, then sex is not binary. Binary means two and only two, ever.

So if someone in the entirety of human history has ever produced both a sperm and an egg cell then sex is not binary, correct?

Anonymous replying to -> #1 19h

One person in several billion wouldn’t change a basic fact of human biology. Just as it’s accepted that humans have two legs despite rare exceptions existing, it would still be accurate to say that human sex is binary. This is a moot point though as there are exactly zero confirmed cases of a human being functionally hermaphroditic.
