Why do leftists worship 20th century socialism when it not only failed but didnt even achieve democracy where it was tried? Free speech should be a core part of socialism and freedom

The United States and other western powers assassinated democratically elected socialist leaders like Salvador Allende, and San Marino maintained a democratically elected communist government for over a decade and remains a democracy to this day.

Canada, Australia, Norway, the UK, Switzerland, Brazil, France, Germany, Jugoslavia before it was intentionally destabilized by the US for being too successful, and basically every other country in the world. Hell, even China has a healthier working class than the U.S. at this point. We should all be ashamed.

In many cases overthrown socialist leaders were then replaced by western-backed right wing military dictatorships. Allende in Chile was replaced with Pinochet. Mosaddegh in Iran was replaced with the Shah. Árbenz in Guatemala was replaced with Armas. Lumumba in Congo (though not technically a socialist) was replaced with Seko. Goulart in Brazil was replaced with a military dictatorship.

And I think that’s something to criticize about those governments. I am a democratic socialist, like Eric Arthur Blair (who you would know better by his pen name George Orwell). His books like Animal Farm were not against socialism, they were against the manipulation of socialism by Stalin and other opportunists.

Yep DemSoc or other pro democracy left forms of government are great in my opinion. I just dont want it to be hijacked by authoritarians. If we steer clear of that we can make such an awesome society

There would undoubtedly be more opportunity for the maintenance of democratically elected socialist regimes in the U.S. didn’t coup every one they had the chance. That means the only self-identified socialists left are those with such stranglehold on the government and such a purge of the opposition that they cannot be overthrown.

That still doesn’t excuse stuff like the USSR through. They took own actions too quash democratic movements such as that in Czechoslovakia or the democratic governments which existed in the Baltics prior to Soviet invasion, and what I would consider to be colonization.

I do think one of the reasons a number of socialist governments have been authoritarian is also just because that’s what often happens as a result of revolutions. When a revolution occurs, that enables people to coalesce power. Granted Russia and China were authoritarian prior to their revolutions too.

The craziest part is when people complain about how much it would cost. We could achieve all of this and more if stopped spending money trying to destabilize socialist countries 😭😭
