So Mamdani actually released documents about 9/11 recently and honored first responders from New York already, so I’m not sure why you’re taking this stance fr. I understand people in his orbit have had problematic views but can you seriously blame a politician who was just beginning his career for having to use very popular/ well known albeit problematic people to get a platform? I totally understand being skeptical of him, I don’t mean to white knight him or say he doesn’t deserve any
It’s sort of a leading question to say for him to be making it about himself. I’m saying if someone has genuinely changed for the better, has changed their way of thinking and wants to show their support for a better cause they should be able to do that. Your questions are still totally valid because they’re what anyone should be asking that very person because the path to changing yourself comes with hard questioning and earning forgiveness.
Okay. I have since calmed down and genuinely appreciate your respectful and well thought out answers. I just feel like he hasn’t really taken the steps to apologize for take accountability for what he’s said I also feel that at the end of the day, it’s a memorial service. And ultimately it should be about the families more than the country or city. I wouldn’t go to a memorial service where the family said they didn’t want me there. I feel it’s just a basic respect thing
honestly, i think it’s a weighing of scales. if he does go, he’s in the wrong for going against the wishes of family members or against the wishes of bigots. if he doesn’t go? then he’d be painted negatively for refusing to honor the lives lost in such a nationally horrific event. (and this interpretation of him would also have its racist and islamophobic versions.)
Fair assessment. If it were me, I’d decline the invitation but frame it as I’m declining because I don’t want my presence to distract from the event and take away the focus on the families. Then, within reason, I’d meet with the families who wanted to meet with me privately, and if a family didn’t wanna meet with me then I’d respect those wishes
If he put out a statement saying “I’m not going to the memorial out of respect to the families who lost loved ones. The day is supposed to be about them and I don’t want to take away from that.” I genuinely don’t think that most people, including most on the right, would have a problem with that
This is definitely the optimal outcome here but a lot of people are about action, so I think some people would be like “he’s just saying that l and doesn’t care enough to actually show out”, you know? It’s not a simple issue for sure and I’m not saying you’re wrong at all, I just think it’s rather complicated so how he would conduct himself and how he communicates will be one of the most important things relating to his choice to appear or not
I appreciate that a lot, I understand tensions can get high when talking about this kind of stuff so no worries lol, and I totally understand that perspective, I agree about it being a common respect thing to not go if the families do not want you there but there’s a chance some families do want his presence and recognition as well. As for the steps to apologizing and taking accountability I think this would be the first step in doing so. Openly recognizing the tragedy immediately distances him
You have good points. I also don’t like that any criticism of his mayoral policies are brushed off as Islamophobia. Regardless of the color of his skin or what faith he practices, he is a PUBLIC servant. And his race or religion shouldn’t be used to shield him from the accountability that comes along with that role Now to be fair to Mamdani, it’s never him himself that does that. Always supporters. But it’s essentially saying that people in positions of power should be treated with kid gloves
Unfortunately a lot of attacks of Mamdani have been more on the basis of his faith by fearmongering about Sharia Law and the like. People definitely just tend to call out the cases of legitimate criticism in a Boy Who Cried Wolf type situation where it’s happened enough that now they assume it’s always the same
Obviously I’m just speaking for myself here. I do not like or agree with Mamdani’s policies, but I don’t think he’s a bad person. I think that he does genuinely love New York and truly believes that these policies will make the city better. I just disagree. And I’d disagree just as much if he were a white Christian 🤷♂️
