401(k) are better in a few ways. But as a consequence, the average Americans wealth was somewhat tied to the stock market. (On purpose bc lobbying/legislation) Before then, usually you got a fixed pension. If stock market did bad, that was employers problem.

It's no more speculation and magic than actual money is. (Well, ignoring how their net worth inflates every year; I'm just talking about stocks in general)
