So a friend last night (bi, brown, not that wealthy and same engr school as me) drunkenly admitted he voted for Trump and that he totally regrets it and doesn’t know what he was thinking. Do any of y’all have any analogous experiences? Feel lied to is all

I saw a political analysis which basically said a lot of men voted for Trump even though they were brown or poor or gay because they can exploit their male privilege. The modern right is basically using misogyny as a unifying driver for men who otherwise are targets of the right.

The general manager of my work's sister location, we all just found out he's a huge MAGA. Even tho he's dark-skinned black. But it's bc he really hates women. And he really, REALLY hates black women. Idk, that's the closest experience I have.

Also is he saying he did it in 2024? That shit is honestly significantly more awful to me than 2016 or 2020. Because that means you SAW Trump try to overthrow the government and how awful and monstrous his first term was and went “yeah that again”

Yes, in 2024. He’s very much so not a misogynist and has been typically on the more progressive side of economic and social issues, like healthcare being free and taxing the wealthiest of us more. Truthfully I have no idea if he was lying about all those things before and I didn’t wanna ask while we were both drunk and blow it all out of proportion. Idk how he justified that vote and idk if I should judge him for it because it seems like he got the memo since then?

Maybe it was just a bad drunk joke? Because otherwise that’s just…really fucking stupid of him

Like I guess my concern is that if someone is willing to vote for an awful bigot that indicates that they must have seriously impaired judgement or that they do not care about human rights very much. Like either way that has concerning implications for being around them.

Like people can change but it’s not enough to be like “wow Trump is bad” they have to confront what serious lapses in their own judgement led to them doing that in the first place and address them. Otherwise they’ll just fall for the next grifter.

Also bro does not at all regret it. He's still a raging MAGA. But again, this is all bc he deeply, deeply hates women.

Idk if it’s a joke. I brought up that one of our old friend group’s members blatantly admitted to being a fascist like to my face nonchalantly one time and this other friend offered some solace like yea idk if I can ever speak to him again then and I felt a little reassured ig but still like how did you not read the writing on the wall here

My comment was also literally about how people who are not white can still use their male privilege. But you made it about your own persecution complex as a white man. You aren’t persecuted. You just see a loss in your relative status due to a movement towards equality. You perceive equality as persecution because you are used to being on top.
