I’m 100% for abolishing the death penalty. AT THE VERY LEAST ABOLISH LETHAL INJECTION HOLY SHIT WHY DO PEOPLE THINK ITS A GOOD IDEA?

There is no reason to have the death penalty in this day and age. It made more sense before the industrial revolution, but not anymore.

Honestly I don’t have strong opinions on the death penalty, and I think a lot of the debate doesn’t have strong points

No. The present date or civilizations progress does not absolve people of the guilt that warrants death. There’s no point in having a civilization if people aren’t civilized and if they can’t prevent themselves from murdering/raping people, they get the death penalty so they don’t multiply.

what exactly does prison do? it doesn’t prevent crime, just provides legal reason to extract labor. y’all will say too far… they also thought abolition was too far 150 years ago. are y’all abolitionists or not?

they outlawed chattel slavery and supplemented it with carceral slavery and cheap wages in the south. this is where i remind everyone, there are more Black people in Amerikan prisons today than were ever bound in chattel slavery. to defend the prison industrial complex is to defend slavery

my neighbor is a veteran (retired legal murderer), and so long as they aren’t still murdering, what’s the issue? violent crimes also demonstrate the lowest rates of recidivism, indicating that typically people are remorseful and do not always wish to commit the act

and again, how does prison actually prevent the murder?

because systems rooted in supremacy and exploitation cannot be reformed. why wasn’t feudalism just reformed?

You’re brutally confusing rehabilitation with incapacitation. A murderer in prison cannot murder someone in the community. And low violent-crime recidivism doesn’t prove prison causes remorse — it only tells you what happens after release. You can argue prison is bad rehabilitation without pretending incapacitation isn’t a form of crime prevention.

Anonymous replying to -> OP 1d

defending our punitive prison system is quite a choice. our prisons are intentionally designed not to rehabilitate, but to encourage recidivism. there is a fundamental reason why we rely on punitive prisons instead of rehabilitative, and that is the 13th amendment allowing for slavery as a punishment of a crime; which is exactly what the private prison complex does to our prisoners: enslaves them for cheap slave labor, cents per hour.

orangutan is right, and a rehabilitative prison system does not mean that violent offenders are not able to be imprisoned or held if they’re incapable of being rehabilitated. plenty of countries already use a rehabilitative prison system as well.

not only do a vast majority of survivors choose not to utilize the criminal justice system (for numerous reasons, a primary one being that it doesn’t work and survivors are often dismissed), but our prisons do not have the capacity to hold the absurd number of abusers. so, again, is the goal to correct behavior and protect people from harm, or is it to punish and extract labor? y’all are approaching prison from an ideal lens, ignoring the material realities of the prison industrial complex

of the around 30% of survivors that actually report instances of sexual violence to the police, only around 5% of abusers are actually prosecuted. can someone in the pro-prison camp please explain how the prison-slavery complex prevents violent crime? prison does about as much to prevent crime as the death penalty does… it doesn’t

I’m against abolishing prisons. I’m well aware our prison system in the US is deeply flawed.

and yet whenever the topic of abolishing prisons come up, there is always a common theme of *replacing the current exploitative prison structure with one intended to rehabilitate individuals capable of rehabilitation* do you think the conversation ends after the word “abolish”? that there is no additional context behind the statement, despite the plethora of comments providing…. well, additional context?

Anonymous replying to -> #7 16h

this just seems like one of those semantic arguments, similar to what was weaponized against “defund the police”. people just hear a statement and accept their immediate assumptions based on that statement, even if they learned the context behind said statement and otherwise agree with it, they still hold opposing beliefs purely out of a semantic disagreement. I’m sorry, and no offense, but this seems stupid asf. no one is saying to entirely abolish prisons with no form of replacement.

like you’re acting as if me or orangutan advocated to just release all prisoners and never convict anyone for their crimes, it’s just silly asf lol

Since you brought it up too, a good chunk of the defund the police crowd actually wanted to completely defund police forces entirely. Polls show that. Eventually the responsibility has to fall on the people marketing the message and not on the people tasked with trying to interpret it.

oh my god, did he or I advocate to release all prisoners, whatsoever? you are intentionally disregarding the actual content of our beliefs because you’d rather maintain your preconceived biases instead of consider an alternative view, despite you already acknowledging the inherent flaws within the US “justice” system.

solely because a majority (as you claim) would immediately misinterpret a statement, does not mean their misinterpretation is representative of what that statement is saying. that is representative of a misinterpretation (on your part), which we have already established, and you seemingly would prefer to maintain that misinterpretation?

As the local representative from the North Pole, I will take this opportunity to state we are not in support of overpopulating prisons. If something is bad enough we normally just feed the offender to the polar bears. It’s a very green solution and please note they are no longer on the endangered species list… You’re welcome planet earth.

Gallup. This is compared to their findings that roughly 34% of Americans supported “reform based” defund the police measures. That’s a statistically significant figure
