
Literally 😭 I do genealogy for fun. Finding Irish ancestors back in Ireland is nearly impossible. They weren’t allowed to practice Catholicism until 1790 bc of the British. They faced genocide bc of the British. You can’t find records before 1833 because the British-backed “pro-treaty” army burned the public records office in the 1922 Civil War.
They came to America for a better life but in my city they had their churches firebombed. A FUCKING CANNON was shot into one. They were conscripted to die in a meat grinder the moment they set foot in the US. Better than the alternative of being starved by ppl who boil chicken, but they were still oppressed and discriminated against
Oh fun little historical footnote: Saint Patrick’s Battalion or Los San Patricios are seen as traitors in the US and heroes in Mexico and Ireland. They defected and while it’s not 100% certain why they did it, each and every theory and their supporting evidence is a separate valid critique of the US government.
