Why can we not talk about Israel with nuance? I’m a first gen Israeli American and I still have family in Israel and I fear for their safety because of Hamas. I don’t think that wanting Hamas destroyed means I hate Muslims

I feel like most people understand that but it really gets down to what you mean by “wanting Hamas destroyed”

Because Israel is an apartheid, settler colonial state that cherished ethnic superiority and is carrying out a genocide

Yes the same way wanting Palestine to be free doesn’t mean an end to Israel.

Yeah this. Like wanting Hamas destroyed is just being used as an excuse by the Israeli state to destroy Gaza in the hopes of creating new settlements. It’s extremely common for genocides and other mass murders to occur during times of war, because that’s the easiest instance to justify it to the populace.

The same way Americans destroyed the Nazis

Also notably… Netanyahu’s government funneled Qatari money to Hamas as a way to weaken the Palestinian authority. We can’t treat Hamas like it emerged in a vacuum. It’s a result of Israeli government policy to weaken Palestinian statehood.

I’m not going to pretend like the Israeli government doesn’t have problems, I think they’re going overboard and don’t care about harming Gazans. I think calling it a genocide is a little disingenuous

Well the USSR played a bigger role in destroying the Nazis, so…

At the very least it’s a result of Israeli officials not caring how many civilians die during their operations, which is at the very least a war crime by violating proportionality. There is also significant evidence of targeting reporters and medical workers. I think it’s reasonable to also say the gaza war is disproportionate punishment and that soldiers have intentionally targeted civilians.

The thing about the label of genocide is that unlike other war crimes it is entirely based on intent. If the intent is to eradicate a people, it is a genocide. If the intent is just not giving a fuck, it’s not. I think statements from Likud officials indicate that intent, but it’s difficult to prove concretely. Either way, it’s war crimes and that doesn’t change how many innocent people have died.

But like if we are being real here, I think the Israeli government is just straight up lying when it pretends the intent here is to destroy Hamas and prevent another Hamas. If Israel’s government actually wanted to prevent this, they would support the establishment of a moderate Palestinian state and end West Bank settlement. Hamas is a product of the PA being viewed as Israeli puppets. But we saw what Likud’s followers did to Yitzhak Rabin when he tried to make peace.

Also I have a feeling that the IDF responding to the 2018 peaceful protests in Gaza with bullets had something to do with the October 7 attacks happening. 223 Gazans were killed, including 46 children.
