week one of bicycle commuting: i’ve learned that motorcyclists are almost always chill, and that SUV drivers are probably the worst human beings to inhabit this living rock

Lifted truck guys are worse in my opinion, I think they see cyclists as their natural enemies or something. They love to cut it super close just to be assholes

in my hometown, they’re legally allowed to run stop signs because professional cyclists dislike strapping out of their pedals, the amount of times I’ve almost killed a cyclist running a stop sign and then having them glare at me is absurd I’ve never seen a cyclist acknowledge on a bike path on a road that they’re on a shared space, same with mountain bikers on a trail All the traits that make lifted truck drivers annoying apply to cyclists except they’re on a smaller vehicle

Bike paths on roads are not shared spaces though ? Regular lanes are though; bikes can take the lane when necessary even if there’s a bike lane. Perhaps it’s unsafe, crowded, keeps disappearing, etc.

Roads are shared spaces, the lanes aren’t specifically but when they cross streets they cross across where traffic drives and they rarely acknowledge it, although this is likely true primarily in my hometown At my college campus too tho stupid ass cyclists try riding their bikes through the walking crowds and end up knocking some poor girl over due to their selfish impatience Cycling just gives upper middle class racist kid named Ethan vibes

so i started cycling because my 2005 dodge neon died, but sure upper middle class. it’s literally more affordable to cycle than it is to drive, that’s why i bike commute now

Idk I think you may be letting one or two micro aggressions color your perception of cyclists as a whole. A lot of people can only afford to get around on a bicycle, cars are extremely expensive rn. Bikes pose essentially no danger to others while cars are the things that make roads dangerous, it just makes sense that bikes have favorable laws to keep them moving and safe

Bikes can cause minor injuries to others but obviously it is extremely rare for a bike crash to be fatal for anyone except for the rider. Majority of fatal injuries on bikes are due to getting hit by a car. Of course most minor injuries are from falling off, or losing control in a puddle, etc.

Yeah but even cases where cyclists give others minor injuries from their careless riding is so exceptionally rare that it’s just odd to bring it up as if it’s comparable to car accidents. People wanna act like cyclists are recklessly endangering others by doing things like blowing stop signs and that just isn’t the case. I think drivers get mad about it because they view it as unfair or hypocritical and the way they complain about it is acting like it’s dangerous when it’s really not
