To the people who are like “we aren’t monkeys” and “we’re more civilized” or whatever I’m going to try to make the point simpler. In literally any other situation a creature would never be allowed to get away with hoarding resources from its community when they are suffering and struggling so much. The only reason that the ultra wealthy can get away with it is they control others with the resources they control. It’s almost perfect textbook financial abuse

In the scenario, the bananas are up for grabs if they beat the singular monkey to death. If we also beat a hypothetical trillionaire to death, their wealth would also be up for grabs, and we could redistribute their wealth equally.

Even in many stratified historical societies, those at the top were expected to maintain their position based on the values they provided. They communicated with the gods to provide a good harvest, they ensured the timely distribution of bread (ex Rome), they provided stability and infrastructure, they shared their wealth with the people (ex Pacific Northwest potlatch ceremonies). Even in highly stratified societies, the elites usually held that position because they fulfilled an important role.

In these times, the quality of life increases that the elites could provide to the people were still limited, but they mattered. And this assistance earned loyalty. During the French Revolution, the neglectful nobility in the south were overthrown, but the Vendée region of France went into rebellion in support of their nobility, because their nobles had diligently maintained local infrastructure services.

Ultimately our modern day elites arose because of the actions of the liberal revolutions like the French Revolution, which were led primarily in the interests of the wealthy merchants and bankers who were denied influence under a monarchical system. Hence they enshrined capitalism and private property rights.

The thing that really sets people like Elon apart is the scale of neglect. They could do so much to change the world and they choose not to. Nero sucked, but he didn’t have the power to end plagues single-handedly or eliminate hunger from the whole empire. Elon does, and he chooses not to.
