Update: They indicted Raul Castro today. Apparently it’s a crime to defend your airspace.
In a week, the US government tried to indict former Cuban President Raul Castro for shooting down a plane that illegally entered Cuban airspace in 1996 AND put a hit out on former Bolivian President Evo Morales for a past relationship he had. Fuck the US

If they’re gonna try to abduct a 94 year old man from his home now it’s gonna look bad tbh

Happened over international waters according to the International Civil Aviation Organization, the planes and pilots were entirely unarmed

It doesn’t matter if you’re armed or not. If you enter someone’s airspace without permission and refuse to leave, you are a threat. Besides, an unarmed plane can carry explosives, biological agents, weapons, or armed individuals. Last but not least, the organization “Brothers to the Rescue” is trained by the CIA to overthrow the Cuban government, with one of the founders claiming to be trained to be a terrorist.

Also, two of the planes entered Cuban airspace.

Who should I trust, the Cuban government or an independent 3rd party?

José Basulto, the founder of organization who were flying the planes, has openly admitted to his affiliation to the CIA. The CIA has launched countless operations to overthrow the Cuban government. Do you really think they should have the right to enter Cuban airspace to promote regime change?

And that’s not even from the Cuban government. That’s coming from his own mouth. You’re defending illegal regime change efforts and framing it as innocent people being killed.

I just wanna see evidence they entered Cuban airspace, just a link, I’m not saying it didn’t happen, I’m not well-versed on the incident

Plus I know all of these specific details, I just always knew the story as the plans being shot down over international waters

Here, this is a testimony from now retired United States Air Force Colonel George Buchner stating that they violated Cuban airspace. In it, he reviewed transcripts as well as radar data from the incident. https://www.latinamericanstudies.org/espionage/buchner-testimony.htm

From what I know about this testimony, his locations were based on hand-plotted radar data directly from the Cuban government. Passengers on a cruise ship saw the actual explosions of the planes 9-11 miles into international waters, the GPS location of the cruise ship was known, and they used witness testimony to triangulate the exact location

Fair enough but I am going to go with the radar data and the transcripts over the Cruise ships passengers. This was coming from a military observer after all.

Yeah, the U.S. radar data, Cuban radar data, and eye-witness reports all suggest different locations, the ICAO determined its most likely that it occurred in international waters but it wasn’t a definitive / conclusive finding if I’m not mistaken

I know the 3 have all debated this for years. One fact does remain true: Cuba felt threatened since this came during a time where U.S. aircraft, including from Brothers to the Rescue, have entered Cuban airspace in the past 2 years prior without approval. Even though the Cuban government tried to reach out with diplomacy for these flights to stop, they wouldn’t.

In the end, this wouldn’t have happened without some kind of provocation. We’re seeing that again with the US military flying drones over Cuba since February of this year.
