Oh it’s Neturei Karta. Yeah they’re a really unusual group. I think it’s correct to say that Israel and Jewish people aren’t synonymous but they’re very unusual and fringe so they’re probably not the best example. They’re one of the ultra-orthodox haredi sects that opposes Israel on a religious bases, saying that it’s improper to return to Israel before the messiah.

Fun fact: Modern Israeli people are not semites. They’ve adopted the term that refers to the language written by Babylonians, Nabataens, Amharer, and Phoenicians. It underwent a change in meaning during the 19th century to justify the Israeli claim to the region.

I mean… the Phoenicians were a Canaanite people very closely related to the ancient Israelites. Ancient Hebrew was a Canaanite dialect, just like Phoenician was. Hebrew is classified as a Semitic language.

Oh yes that’s very true I know. I’m just saying that NK are a very highly publicized group, but they are more fringe than most people realize. There are several ultra-orthodox sects that are anti-Zionist on religious grounds such as Satmar, but NK are known for being very fringe even by their standards, including aligning themselves with Iran.

The anti-Zionist ultra orthodox are a very interesting subset because they have unusual reasons for being anti-Zionist. There’s the messiah thing and many also believe Israel is too secular. NK also present the more mainstream reasons during their protests too, talking about the massacres etc.

It feels like there’s kind of an interesting spectrum, where Jewish anti-Zionist people tend to either be pretty secularized or ultra-orthodox. It’s those in the middle that are often pro-Israel, from what I’ve heard talking to Jewish acquaintances.

Yes they are but so is Arabic, Amharic, Maltese and a few others. My point is that anti-semantic is an inaccurate term to describe the persecution or discrimination specifically against the Israeli people/Jews.

I see what you’re saying. Semitic is a much broader umbrella yeah

Semite is a speaker of a Semitic language, Hebrew is a Semitic language. Also Semite is not a term Jewish people adopted for themselves, Semite was first used as a term for Jewish people when it came to make up half of the term “anti-Semite,” which was coined by an antisemitic German newspaper edited as a self-descriptor.

I’m not sure if you meant to imply this at all, but just tbc Semite is not an ethnic label, and nobody self-identified as a Semite historically, not until the term Semitic started to be used for the language family

Okay yeah and I thought it must be them. I don’t like how pics of them are brought up whenever you want to show “anti-Zionist Jews” because yeah, there’s lots of Jews who are anti-Zionist and who aren’t crazy
