Naming it palantir is such a “yes we know we are evil” move that it’s beyond parody

Palantirs are crystal balls in Lord of the Rings, used for long distance communication and seeing things happening elsewhere/elsewhen. They are not inherently evil, but are most notably used in the series by Sauron (the bad guy) to command and manipulate other characters.

It’s not. In LOTR the Palantirs are rare crystal balls that can see everything going on in the world, and the films have it where the villain is in control of one of them Like…..just look at it

No, the SSA doesn’t have info about your whereabouts, medical claims, fingerprints, or phone calls. One of Palantir’s products aggregates stuff like this in one place. The SSA is running on database software that’s probably at least 50 years old and held together by duct tape and prayers

Actually SSA software is built on COBOL and held together by institutional knowledge and also prayers

I would be shocked if they’re up to date with the latest release of COBOL

Oh I’ve already seen a few of those unfortunately. I think one was to the rust repo or something. The maintainer was NOT happy 😭 the fix didn’t make sense at all and didn’t match what was in the PR description. I assume it was a research project or some sort of test
