If we wanna stop the data centers yall need to stop fucking using AI lol, this should not be this hard to understand. If we’re going to boycott authors and artists for supporting shit causes to cut off their royalties funding then what makes AI different.

i mean if we want data centers to stop someone should kirk altman. genuinely though this boom arguably doesn’t happen or is much less insane if sam altman doesn’t spend every waking moment making deals with money he doesn’t have, which in turn drives spending from competitors and creates a feedback loop.

I mean yes and no, Sam Altman and OpenAI are hemorrhaging money with the hope of one day becoming profitable, and the only way they can maintain their valuation while doing that is presenting an image of constant growth. OpenAI agrees to spend money they haven’t even conceived of getting, and it creates a feedback loop where other firms have to match the investment to keep up. OpenAI is driving the pace at which expansion is happening because not doing so is an existential threat to them.

Like, AI spend likely can’t be avoided, but the current unsustainable growth pace is not a given, and has been directly created by OpenAI

OpenAI was just the first to market. The major AI labs like Anthropic and Google DeepMind were almost there around that time too. Getting rid of one person isn’t going to “stop data centers” when they literally precede OpenAI by decades
