My problem with progressives who shut down any sort of identity talk because “they’re just trying to distract you from real issues” is that they believe bigoted people are just misguided instead of ppl who hold bigotry as a core part of their world view.

Those aren’t usually progressives, they’re usually Marxist class reductionists

do you think babies are born that way?

what’s innate is perhaps their inability to see outside their own perspective/what benefits them. or their susceptibility to influence, or lack of ability to critically think (TLDR their intelligence is low) but bigotry specifically of any kind is always learned

No but I think that people learn it at very young and impressionable ages and then they internalize and it becomes a core part of their world view that needs more than just “you’re being distracted” to get them away from believing.

ok so you agree they were misguided? it can happen at any stage of life, its all about the community they find themselves in (this can be friends, family, your town, or online spaces)

I feel like you are being intentionally obtuse about the point of the message. When you treat bigoted ppl like they’re JUST misguided (while yes they are misguided) downplays the severity that bigotry becomes entrenched into their world view and requires far more than just shushing any talk of identity to correct. Further when you just reduce it to an individual being misguided you also severely downplay how much bigotry is systemic.

That’s fair to say but there are definitely a number of ppl who willingly call themselves progressives and have this dream of being the savior of the avg white working middle class man and will shut down any attempts to discuss identity. Those are the specific progressives I’m calling out. But yeah you do raise a very fair point.

when you view it from my perspective it gives them room to unlearn it all and change when you use your perspective you damn them to be that way forever. have u ever had the displeasure of speaking to a man who REALLY likes nietzche? i dont have the perfect words to articulate this but there’s an ongoing problem with these kinds of people where they think “well, god (or whoever) made me this way so i might as well represent it”. do u get what i mean or should i elaborate?

Yeah I hate those people. They’re usually privileged white leftists. I agree sometimes that identity politics is used to distract, but I also think there’s merit in recognizing that some people are statistically more disadvantaged, and that’s not always simply because of an economic system

Saying that bigotry is more serious than someone just being misguided by forces that are intentionally trying to distract them is not damning them it’s wanting to get to the core issue of bigotry. It’s dealing with deconstructing a worldview and dealing with systemic issues that make it so easy for bigotry to not only be introduced but also reinforced. 1/2

Just simply saying someone is misguided and leaving it at that and squashing any attempt for marginalized ppl to actually talk about identity because you don’t want to upset bigoted ppl doesn’t do anything to fix the issue it gives everyone a chance to avoid uncomfortable conversations.

For real. Imagine being a Marxist and thinking class is the only contradiction

see now youre adding a bunch of shit that wasnt in the original equation. it is true that 99% of bigoted people (1% can just be psychopaths or smth) have been made that way/ have been guided in a bad direction. do you agree with that statement alone?

“The original equation” you are aware there’s a 255 word limit right?

And I’ve already answered the question you’ve posed and I already added my explanation. You’re not adding anything by asking a question that’s already been answered and expanded upon. Look if you’re one of the people who got called out by this post you can just say that.

youre lumping together one belief with opinions you often observe comorbidly in people. but you cannot use that to say the original belief is wrong
