Well there’s strong evidence it helps reduce crime by keeping nasty people off the streets. We know people who commit one crime are more likely to commit more crimes and the vast majority of crime are committed by a relatively small portion of the population. It’s something like 1% of people commit 60% of violent crimes. There are plenty of studies showing that it’s possible to reduce crime in this way. Levits 1994 study is the most famous.
