If you know so much enlighten us.
Can’t wait for the uninformed people who hate on AI without even a surface-level understanding of it talk about how Apple is somehow ushering in the surveillance state in iOS 27

Some of it is literally re-announcing features that already existed. Most of the features operate on-device. The ones that don’t run on-device use servers that Apple announced two years ago for Private Cloud Compute, where no one can access the data besides you and usually require explicit invocation (e.g. triggering Siri)

That’s what I hate the most about the AI push. Calling everything; search engines, QR code generators, voice chats/assistants, translators.., AI. It’s annoying. And have the time these features are stupid, not an improvement and added on top of existing feature (search engines for example).

And there have been a lot of investigations that voice assistants are always recording. I think it was Alexa that got caught and the recordings included a couple having sex. :|

They are always listening for a “wake word”, but this detection is also done on-device. Sometimes there are false positives (I’ve seen this with Siri and Alexa). You can turn the “Hey Siri” feature off if you don’t want it to listen for that

Sorry I guess it’s controversial to say it’s a bad thing this is happening and that the companies are storing that information. What reason would they have to store what people are saying…

This is the feature I’m referring to that seems like it’s re-announced. It’s pretty minor and may just be an error on the reporter’s part, but the ability to add a reminder by typing “Do X at Y time” and have it actually create a reminder titled “Do X” and alert at Y time has been there for a while. That’s not even powered by an LLM, unless they’ve changed it recently. There are much smaller models (not LLMs) that can pick up days of the week and times for this purpose

This just feels like laziness….

Nothing about your conversations leaves your device unless it hears the wake word. I agree that sometimes it’s too sensitive, and I personally turned off my Alexa because of a combination of not using it and having far too many false positives

Then how did these recordings get leaked… “they don’t leave your device” my ass

It’s a pretty simple feature tbh. It saves a few clicks, especially on a computer. No need to poke around the calendar, scroll through the dates, accidentally set something for AM instead of PM (I’ve accidentally done this several times). The model behind it is simply looking for things that look like date and time-related phrases

They got sent because it heard “Alexa” for some reason. Everything after “Alexa” *is* sent to Amazon. I have zero clue why it happens and just told you I turned off my Alexa myself, partially because of this issue. Things like “I’ll text you” (said quickly) can be picked up by mistake. I know people who have siblings named Alexa and they changed the word to “Echo” because it triggered wayyyy too often

A news anchor once discussed a story about a kid ordering things through Alexa and it actually triggered people’s own devices and ordered vacuum cleaners (because that’s what the news anchor said)
