I agree, this country is not in a good state. However, I disagree that it is temporary. Donald Trump is not an anomaly of the system. He is exactly the kind of person our system serves to support: the rich man. Because of this, he is above the law. His electoral victory is also not an anomaly; he didn’t get lucky, he strategically leveraged the moral rot at the heart of American Culture (white supremacy and American exceptionalism) to win two elections.

Donald Trump is not the cause of this country’s disarray, but rather a symptom of systemic issues. These symptoms will worsen as more Trump-esque characters push the Republicans to the Right and the Democrats rush to appeal to the “centrists” that lie between the two parties, causing both parties to become more right wing over time.

Sorry for the rant but this being a “temporary thing” is a dangerous conception to have because American presidents have been morally bankrupt to varying degrees. The only difference with Trump is that he does it openly and brazenly
