One thing I find interesting about Christian conservatives is that they oppose welfare because “charity is a personal obligation, not meant to be enforced by the state” or whatever but then on abortion they need to enforce their morals on everyone

Like y’all just pick and choose the issues (abortion, gay marriage, trans rights, etc.) where it’s imperative that we enforce everyone acts like a Christian, but feeding the hungry or housing homeless people is way too much to ask of Christian billionaires who want to decide they owe poor people nothing

charity should be up to the individual to choose to do with their resources if they have them, not required for everyone no matter what killing babies is bad why is this a hard concept

No one really thought abortion was “killing babies” until Protestant leaders and Republicans started exchanging some cash and plans in the 1980s. And legally fetuses are not babies. Trying to have a developing clump of cells be considered a human life with all the legal protections of born humans, because they were already “shaped in the image of God,” is an example of Christians trying to enforce their moral doctrine on everyone.

The American Medical Association wanted to “professionalize medicine” (eliminate competition from midwives and in-home practitioners), and demographic anxiety that white people were being replaced among WASPs. It really wasn’t until later that the whole “abortion is baby murder” thing really caught on

Yeah I’m not saying the state doesnt have the power to set laws. I’m saying Christians pick and choose when they think the government should create/enforce laws through the lens of “Christian morals” and when Christianity should be optional to participate in. They almost always pick the option where they can inflict worse outcomes on poor people, women, gay people, etc.

I mean yes they used that language, but it’s highly reductionist to act like that’s the one reason why they wanted to ban abortion, and you didn’t have droves of Christian Protestant voters fired up about it because of “baby murder.” That part came later when Republicans where trying to find ways to gain popularity again after opposing the Civil rights movement
