People saying “It was a long time ago” in the comments literally don’t remember it was just 1 generation before Columbus and the start of the Indigenous American genocides. There was a massive Greek (modern Byzantine) genocide in Anatolia in the 1920s btw
End the occupation. Retake Constantinople.

It’s kinda funny the land back movement. The fall of Constantinople was 39 years before Columbus

Dude my comment was about it being cringe to dehumanize Turkish people, who in that region are often just turkified Greeks. Opposition to settler colonialism doesn’t mean expelling people who have lived there for generations.

Like we also need to talk about how Muslim communities within the Balkans have been demonized and expelled. Crete once had a massive Muslim population, themselves predominantly Greek-speaking. They were expelled as part of the population exchange (which Turkey themselves helped instigate as a project to replace Christian villages they genocided). I’ve seen the remnants of the Turkish quarters in Kavala and Thessaloniki. Their communities were expelled too for something they couldn’t control.

I mean he engaged with my comment more than #1 so I feel it was reasonable to assume this was also about me. He said people. There were only two people.

Ah ok. Btw if you’re ever in Athens, I recommend checking out the Benaki Museum. There’s tons of museums to choose from obviously, but the Benaki Museum is the only one that covers Greek history and culture under ottoman rule. They’ve got a ton of really incredible clothing sets and entire rooms from ottoman era Crete.

It seems like modern Greek historiography tries to minimize ottoman cultural influence as much as possible, but it’s super cool seeing how Turkish and Greek culture interacted on Crete. Those Cretan Muslim communities still exist today in diaspora, mostly in Turkey, but there’s villages in Lebanon and Syria which still speak Greek.
