Netanyahu’s government funneled Qatari funds to Hamas in order to weaken the control of the more moderate Palestinian Authority. When Gazans peacefully protested in 2018, the IDF responded with fatally shooting over 200 people and injuring 9,000. Egypt provided advanced warning of the October 7 attack and the Israeli government didn’t take it seriously. It was easily preventable. But that would prevent expansionism.

Also it’s very common for colonial genocides to occur in retaliation for a massacre attack. That’s what the Herero and Nama genocide committed by Germany was, which Israel recognizes. It’s what many genocides of Native Americans and Aboriginal Australians were. It’s even what Turkey claims the Armenian genocide was. Of course, it’s always selective. The continuous killings of Palestinians by West Bank settlers is ignored.
