I genuinely don’t understand the “price floor” for farmers, why even compete with the private market then if you’re forced to keep bailing them out. Like pay farmers good since it’s hard work. But just publicize the industry at that point

We can’t just rely on trade and let the free market weed the farmers out since. We’re fucked if any part of the international supply chain fails. But WHY COMPETE ON THE FREE MARKET THEN

I would argue it's all political motivations of why we prop up our small farmers. Lots of votes to be gained by bailing out small farmers because chances are there entire family was farmers and on that same land. Free market would 100% squeeze local small farmers out for mega ones but there's political pressure to keep the small ones.
