I believe in the self determination of people. This goes for the right of the Taiwanese to have their own government if they so choose. Many in Taiwan still identify Taiwan as part of China, just under the ROC. But many of the younger generation increasingly see it as a separate country.

Taiwan is supremely important to the US tech industry. For one, that’s where TSMC is headquartered and produces 90% of their chips. Even the TSMC facility in Arizona has to send their semiconductors back to Taiwan for final touches before they can be shipped back to the US and used.

Why?

Because it’s been agreed on in UN resolutions. This is just the US trying to fuel a separatist movement to weaken China

Except the UN has not officially agreed that Taiwan is a part of China The UN does recognize the PRC as the only legitimate representative of China at the UN, but it has never taken an explicit stance on Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Let them have it, it’s not worth WW3 over. I like my life too much to care about the freedom of a few million people, billions of people don’t need to die for them

Why can’t we maintain the current status quo, which has successfully prevented war for decades? Why can’t we allow Taiwan to continue to function as a de facto independent democracy? Also, we can definitely decrease the aggressiveness of both our military posturing and our rhetoric to lower the temperature. Plus, we can use diplomacy to diplomatically isolate China to make war with Taiwan politically infeasible for them.
