Ik it’s not the time but it’s an insane difference to be a democrat/liberal/leftist from the south vs the north. The elitist way that white northern democrats talk about abt and view the south is so vile imo

Classism has always been a problem among liberals, I try to push back wherever I see it

Oh yeah this is a huge thing. I mean even just the way I’ve seen people from New York City treat anywhere outside New York City is fucking wild

If you look at the history, the north uses the south as the racism scapegoat so they can pretend they don’t have any problems. But the north isn’t clean and egalitarian like they pretend. I suggest people look at the pictures of how white chicagoans treated MLK’s 1966 Chicago campaign. I would post more pictures but I don’t want the yikyak filters to ban me for pictures of kkk hoods and swastikas

Also this isn’t always the case but it deff feels rooted in racism. Not in a like in an overly racist way but characterizing the whole south as dumb white trash hicks when we have some of the highest diversity in the country is weird to me. Not to mention the reason the south is the way it is now is literally because of systemic racism. There are so many good people in the south, and it’s also not our fault its gerrymandered to hell and back even Alabama is like 40% democrats

YESSSS EXACTLY. Like especially people from the Midwest pmo lol like why would black ppl want to to go to a place that is 99% white. It’s very easy to be on your high horse about racism when you don’t know a single POC 😭 Also as someone from an SEC school the MOST racist loser weirdos are ALWAYS from up north somewhere. They think they can come down here and be openly racist and that’s not the case. Every part of the country has its strengths and weaknesses and it makes me sad the way people-

Characterize the south. The south is a beautiful place and a lot of the people here are good hard working people, and it’s so rich in culture too. I wish we could do more to acknowledge the good parts as liberals. Also it’s so much harder to be a liberal here like bc you are constantly having to actually experience pushback on it. TLDR we should appreciate all of the areas of the US and work to fix their flaws (except like Utah)

One of my favorite historical anecdotes was when a northerner visited the South during reconstruction and was astounded to see black and white people standing side by side in the same busses and movie theaters. In the north, residential segregation had already relegated black people to separate neighborhoods, so there was no need for Jim Crow. In the south, Jim Crow was instituted because white and black people lived closely together.

A lot of northerners pretend to not be racist because they never encounter black people. So they can say they aren’t racist like those southerners but never have to back it up. But god forbid a black person moves into their little Wisconsin town and they suddenly become way less egalitarian.

Little historical correction there, reconstruction would have been over for probably 30+ years at that point

Like sundown towns were overwhelmingly in the north rather than in the south. That’s something most people don’t know. The south had Jim Crow and other means of systemic racism to oppress black people. Sundown towns were a northern strategy.

Hmmm I’d have to check. It was definitely pre-Jim Crow. And I said busses when I meant to say trams. Actually let me see if I can find the original source real quick

Ok can’t find the specific anecdote source but it would have been late 1880s early 1890s so you’re right reconstruction was over by then. And I think it was in Charleston specifically. We read the anecdote in a Race and Racism class at my college.
