People on Reddit pointed out that it’s similar for Belize, which makes me think the map data for some countries has been pretty sparse for a while (for whatever reason)

I’m sorry but this is an absurd comparison. That being said, whoever made this change is evil if it was on purpose

Is there any confirmation this hasn’t been the case for a while?

I see the same in Oman (look around Muscat) and Mongolia (look around Ulaanbaatar). If you zoom in, there’s no district-level info, and smaller cities don’t have labels. Geographic features and points of interest (hospitals, some stores, parks, nature preserves) are still labeled. They only have the labels for the big cities in some of these countries. They follow the same pattern as Lebanon

Ok, I see the same pattern for a few other countries and I get the feeling this has been the case for a while. I posted a screenshot and listed other examples below. I have zero clue why they don’t show the info for smaller cities in some countries, but it’s likely because they never collected their own data. They’re still rolling out their “new maps” (they seem to have stopped using TomTom for most things). The new map rolled out in Palestine in 2022, even before Mexico and Thailand
