I think we should Unit 731 people that are convicted of Child Rape. Shave them bald, burn their finger prints, hand them to the CIA to do whatever the fuck they want. Normally i’m a rehabilitation first type of guy. But there’s a line.

People with overly punitive worldviews seem to never consider that 1. The government does in fact get convictions wrong frequently and 2. Performative punishment will cause victims to hide their abuse because often times abusers are family members.

Like we have this conversation with death penalty *constantly* where people will say “oh you’re against the death penalty??? So you don’t think x horrible criminal should be punished???” and it’s like bruh the point is that people have been falsely given the death penalty all the time. It’s an obsession with moralistic vengeance and not with actually preventing these crimes or helping victims.

agreed on all points. A world where we can torture child sex offenders is a world where criminal justice is perfect. We don’t live in that world unfortunately and it’s doubtful we will ever do it. However the last point I do contend just because I don’t believe any punishment for a crime prevents future crimes or helps victims. I believe punishments are for the people doing the crimes. Some punishments are for rehabilitation. Some are for true vengeance for the action.

something you didn’t mention in the first part is torturing of child sex offenders in addition to causing victims to hide the abuse, it will also cause abusers to kill their victims to try to hide any evidence. I don’t have any but statement to that because all three of those are valid concerns

I also don’t view harsh punishments as being effective at preventing crime. Due to my own philosophical worldview, I don’t view vengeance as being something worthwhile. I get why other people do, but for me I don’t feel that causing more suffering makes the world a better place, even if the person suffering is a bad person. But like we seem to agree on the impracticality of actually doing this due to the flaws of the criminal justice system either way.

I am in agreement with you. Vengeance doesn’t make the world a better place, but we live our lives doing things for example to our bodies that don’t make our bodies a better place. We do it because we want to, a desire. Now torturing human isn’t the same as eating a sweet treat, but knowing a child sex offender is suffering more than any other human on the planet brings some sort of solace to the heart. For me at least.
