FOR SUUURE! Like there’s definitely common ground there. Conservatives are tired of the wrong people getting guns and making every gun owner look bad, the left doesn’t want the wrong mentally ill people getting the fucking things either. Banning them isn’t going to work (we have too many in circulation) and clearly just letting everyone have everything isn’t going to work either.

and if anything the extreme prevalence of firearms that exists as a result of the 2nd amendment has enabled/legitimized law enforcement killing people of color at disproportionate rates

Those are the losers we’re talking about. I worked at a gun range that obviously had a more conservative background. I saw plenty of people who are conservatives refuse service to people that were disturbed and supported background checks. Any sensible person will agree that not everyone should have a firearm.

to be clear I’m not trying to say there aren’t conservatives who support common sense gun control measures like universal background checks, but the NRA’s co-opting of conservative politics to maximize profit for firearm companies is disgusting and principled conservatives should vocally oppose it

I agree, but let’s remember when Obama tried to pass gun control measures years ago but even with the Democratic Party in congress there wasn’t a full agreement on it with some democrats not even showing to vote after the Sandy Hook Tragedy.

i don’t put much stock in a single instance of dems not passing gun control, it’s deeply disappointing, but it doesn’t exonerate the right. personally, i hate centrist party line dems because of their inaction. overwhelmingly the opposition and obstructionist behavior towards gun control has originated on the right, which imo places the vast majority of culpability for the continuing epidemic of gun violence with the GOP.

We have one of the highest rates of gun violence in the world, and black people are the most likely to be victims of gun violence.

Well maybe they wouldn’t have so many deaths if their citizens were better armed to deal with foreign threats. Afghanistan armed their population and kicked multiple empires off of their territory. Why can’t Palestine?

I’m sorry is your argument genuinely that Palestine should have just “gotten weapons”? Because there’s been a whole lot of work done via US influence campaigns at the behest of Israel, and direct actions by Israel that explicitly restrict weapons entering Gaza. “Just arm yourself” doesn’t fucking work when an occupying force is controlling the flow of almost all goods in and out of your land. Get fucking real.

These are literally things that the second amendment is there to protect people against. But if you wanna be disarmed by the same government you don’t trust then by all means give them your guns. You’ll be contributing towards genocide like the rest of the government, they’ll send those weapons overseas to used to kill more people.

brother the government can and will disarm you if they want to, regardless of whatever weaponry you have. also, can you cite a single source for the government sending confiscated weapons overseas in any significant number, or disarming the populace in any significant number?
