Because you are all trapped into thinking the same way. The social climate of the modern liberalism doesn't allow for free thinking and expression modern conservatism is more of a reaction based system more deviation of thought. You can have two conservatives in a room and they might agree on one thing
In a sense they are correct that far right isn’t inherently regressive. In that the origins of fascism was a hyper-nationalist ideology which existed in opposition to more traditional monarchism. When fascism was developed it was considered progress. But in the sense of us having emerged out of racial inequality and authoritarianism, fascism would be regressive in the modern day.
I strongly think the inherent hyper-nationalism of fascism inevitably leads to ethnic cleansing. Fascism is inherently unsustainable and unethical because it requires the persecution of targeted groups. It can progress infrastructure and education quality, but not social equality beyond perhaps class or long-term stability.
I personally would characterize liberalism as either moderately progressive or conservative. When liberalism was first developed as an alternative to monarchism, it was revolutionary. But it has since become the standard system of government across the world, and is what new revolutionary ideologies are usually oriented against. Liberalism generally favors maintaining the current status quo, with slight progression over time through democratic means.
Socialism, anarchism, and communism would be the inherently progressive modern ideologies, because they exist in contrast to the liberal status quo. Fascism shares history with these ideologies as something revolutionary, but it is based more in re-attaining previous national prominence and domination rather than increasing social equality.
Like there’s a fascinating history of how fascism was tied in many cases to early socialist movements (like how the English fascist party originated from the Labour Party) but I think it’s misleading to put fascism in the same box as socialism because they have very different goals.
Communism is usually focused on the liberation of the working class as a whole, while fascism is focused on the supremacy of one ethnic or national group through the suppression and elimination of others. And in communism, authoritarianism is usually portrayed as a necessary middle step rather than the end goal as it is in fascism. That’s not to say there can’t be overlaps when communism or socialism becomes sufficiently nationalistic (ex the USSR) but I think there’s a difference
