back when the right was actually just regular right wing patriotic instead of the racist nationalist hellscape we got going on now

Okay but Reagan was literally elected on right wing backlash to desegregation and bussing. Desmond Tutu called him “a pure racist plain and simple.” Reagan vetoed the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act. I feel like we have this tendency to treat the vehement racism of the modern Republican Party as if it is new but it’s not. The republicans have relied on racism since the 60s to get elected.

I mean, Reagan and his administration were still racist lol. Reagan called diplomats from Africa “apes” in private. His campaign head, Lee Atwater, admitted they were running off of racist intentions

oh yeah reagan is still a massive piece of shit but i guess i meant from a general perspective, “the right” during reagan was much closer to actual center right than “the right” is currently

Ok, but there was so much more to the story than Reagan vetoed the bill bc he’s racist, though. It was more ab the administrations policy of constructive engagement.

And yet even the “pure racist” ultimately came to the conclusion that granting amnesty to 3.2 million illegal immigrants was a better option than this clusterf$&@
