I bartend. An alarming amount of customers can't read the menus. Not bc they're lazy or can't see it; it's bc they literally can't read. So the current state of the nation kinda makes sense.

I live in Louisiana. I have an ALARMING amount of family that cannot read. I know middle aged people who cannot write. I have personally had to read mail and doctor’s paperwork for multiple people. I have had to explain how to use a phone and navigate apps using their icons because they can’t even read the word “settings”. This has been going on since I was a child. It’s been like this for a long, long time, especially down south.

Bro I don't even deal with anyone under the age of 21. Our adult population is already alarmingly illiterate, so yeah, Gen Alpha is beyond cooked 😭

Well duh, I would assume young kids don’t know how to read yet, it’s literally their job to teach them that. Teachers complaining about their students not knowing shit is like Firemen complaining that a house is on fire

Someone doesn’t know how school works.😬Let’s say a fourth grade teacher is discussing her worry for students not being able to read in her class. In most state’s, the curriculum to learn to read is primarily in kindergarten and 1st grade. Maybe second too on certain phonics skills. But past that, the child should be able to read unless they have underlying problems in which they should get an Individualized Education Plan so that they can receive the proper resources they need to help them.

There’s many reasons why students can reach older grades without being able to read/read on their level. And it’s never lack of teacher support. Politics does play a huge role in it. Try watching “The Right to Read” if you have time or are interested on the topic.
