I’ll preface this by saying idk what the context is behind this, but OP you do know that you can be racist while having a girlfriend that’s black, right? I’m not saying you are per se, but just that your girlfriend doesn’t like “disqualify”(for lack of a better term) you from being racist if that makes sense
I think 3 brought up a great point in regards to your question; but that doesn’t mean it automatically applies to you. do you mind if I ask why people started saying that stuff, because I’m assuming it wasn’t a randomly targeted or unprovoked thing? there’s a lot of things that are indeed racist, even if they may not seem like it in the moment, a great example of these types of things are “micro-aggressions”!
No not necessarily. I can not have an outward hatred for a group of ppl but still have prejudice towards them 😬 racism isn’t just or always “grrrr I hate *insert group of ppl*” Racism isn’t as simple as ppl make it out to be, and tokenizing ur supposedly black gf in itself is racist 😭
it doesn’t even have to be hate, but a sense of superiority as well; but racism specifically deals with systemic power if I’m not mistaken ex: someone who doesn’t necessarily hate people of another race, but who thinks they’re superior to every other race, is indeed prejudiced and discriminatory. if that persons belief is or was supported by legal frameworks, an example being white supremacy within the United States, then they’re racist as well.
you realize racism isn’t solely hating people for their skin color, right? it’s waaaayy more nuanced than that… it’s the way you won’t understand her hair needs, the way you can’t experience the same stress of being followed at the store, the way you aren’t able to consider her race that she has been taught to consider every day since she was a barely older than a toddler. You need to learn A LOT to ensure that you’re not unknowingly perpetuating racism in your daily life with her.
i’m not talking about her bc obviously i don’t know her, but I know of women like her who have had to endure the microaggressions and asides that aren’t intended to be offensive but are still racist, nonetheless. “When I say my life matters, you can say yours does too but I bet you never have to remind anyone to look at it from your point of view.” -Mavis Staples (Build A Bridge)
White people have literally NEVER had legislation against them demeaning them or belittling them as something inherently less than other races in the country. Don’t bring up the Irish either bc they were bestowed suffrage and white privilege by Dixiecrats, who encouraged them to be racist toward the Black Americans that they’d worked alongside in the slums so they had a chance to get out of that poverty.
Some of y’all act like we live in a world where we never face hostility. We get called racist, evil, and even the devil on a regular basis. Obviously that’s not comparable to slavery, but constantly being judged and treated like you’re some evil monster takes a toll on a person too
You are so close to the point. Racism, in every facet or form INCLUDING microaggressions, literally shortens the life span of the average Black Americans due to the overwhelming amount of stress that they endure via systemic racism in this country and sometimes even within their own communities (colorism, etc.). It causes health problems physically with higher likelihood of stress-induced illnesses and that naturally causes more mental health concerns too. The nuance is SO IMPORTANT here, kid.
i’m also white, and you’re just blatantly wrong. the only white people who get called racist, or evil, whatever, are the ones who arrogantly refuse to reflect on their problematic beliefs; or the ones who are just outright racist. in case you’re not aware, belief systems like white supremacy is generational. it’s passed down through the family, taught in the homes, many times taught in schools, etc. that shit takes active effort to deconstruct.
far too many people like to believe that they’re a “good person”, without ever putting in an ounce of effort to support that belief. for us white people, the absolute bare minimum is putting an active effort into understanding and deconstructing white supremacy. Otherwise, you’re just a part of the problem, even without realizing it.
