i’m a leftist, but i can’t help but bring up that we started this slippery slope when we normalized cancelling people for their past online history. liberals and leftists laid the groundwork for conservatives to now do the same. but you guys never listen.

You really need an explanation as to how short lived social media trends differ from government mandated phone checks?

Cancelling people for stuff they said a long time ago has been a thing for so long in US politics, goes much farther back than just the 2010s

receiving widespread criticism from many private individuals for online comments is not quite the same as state mandated social media sweeps for every single visitor

Like, every “major” case of cancel culture is just mass criticism, which for one, only typically happens to people with an existing large platform, and for two, isn’t a state action. I’m sure it sucks to have a million people all tweeting that your new comedy special bombed, but that’s not the same as the state deciding your speech is too dangerous to be allowed to visit the country because you made fun of our leaders.

I remember when I went to a TPUSA speaking engagement to fearmonger about “Cancel Culture” and the speaker who was hired and trained by a multimillion dollar organization to give talks all over the country about this shit was completely stumped when I asked him “can you draw a meaningful distinction between ‘cancel culture’ and controversy?” because “cancel culture” is just the right wing culture war word for controversy. Controversy isn’t new, the online left didn’t invent controversy.
